This article featured on The Conversation debunks myths around School Breakfast Program participation, from alleged relationship between breakfast and obesity to breakfast in the classroom harming students’ academic performances.
This research looked at over 1,100 NYC public elementary and middle schools between 2006-2007 and 2011-2012, where students’ breakfast participation, body mass index (BMI), achievement, and attendances were collected. The result found no evidence that Breakfast in the Classroom led to student weight gain or to reduced academic performances, as measured by achievement on reading and math standardized tests.
